Hello
I'm Laural the founder of Community Garden Greens. When I started dreaming up this little company I had a couple things on my mind; if we care for the food we eat we are less likely to waste it; the plants I'm growing taste like nothing I've found in the grocery store; and how can I create a year-round community garden without a lot of physical land in a climate that gets as cold as Winnipeg does. After months of ideas, talks with advisors and many doubts out came the idea for Community Garden Greens.
My Story
During the pandemic I started a horticultural certificate through the University of Guelph. I have always had a love of plants and wanted to learn more about them. I had never planned to leave the position I held by my brother's side at Lennard Taylor Design Studio but, as the pandemic came to a close and things started to go back to pre-pandemic life I began to see that there were things I wanted to focus on more than working in a position that didn't light me up the way it should. Number 1, spending more time with my son before he doesn't want to spend the time with me (He's now 10). Number 2, Me, I've spent my whole career helping build and support other people's dreams and it's time for me to take those skills and build something of my own.
I have spent the better part of 2023 and some of 2024 working on myself, diving in to what I like, need and want out of this life. This decision has been challenging, humbling and contained many tears of both joy and apprehension. Here are some of the things I've discovered along the way.
I believe sustainability is imperative, though no industry has completely figured it out yet, mine included. I'm always thinking about things I can reuse, repurpose or create from old. You'll see some of this in the Living Greenery Bouquets I sell, every vessel I use has been thrifted or gifted. I get great joy from hand selecting these treasures!
I believe that every person has a right to fresh, healthy food, period. It is one of my goals to use technology and teach everyone who wants to learn how this can be done in any climate with limited space. For the ones that don't have time or passion for growing, this was the idea for the Garden Greens subscription box. I do all the work, but you get the fresh delicious plants every week to harvest at your leisure.
I am a mom and it has been so enjoyable to watch my son get involved in the growing of the greens. He's so interested in trying new varieties of greens straight from the garden and in new recipes. It has been a great way to get healthier options into his belly.
I look forward to the opportunities ahead and to the connections along the way!
Smiles,
Laural
